13 and 14 year olds; children born in 1997 and 1998

What?

The Kananaskis Alpine Ski Team K2 program is designed for athletes who are interested in developing their fitness, skiing, racing and mental preparedness to a higher level.  The program focuses on reinforcing fundamentals learned at the K1 level and applying them in a more competitive environment.  The K2 program follows the guidelines and recommendations as outlined by Alpine Canada for the "Learn to Race" development phase.

Where, When and How Often?

The 11-month K2 program begins in early June with a comprehensive preseason dryland program.  4 - 6 training sessions per week are scheduled throughout this preparation phase.  Dryland training is held at various venues throughout the Calgary area dependent upon what activity is planned for the day (weight training, gymnastics, field sports, yoga, mountain biking, etc).  Athletes are educated in and expeted to put into effect various aspects of sport psychology, nutrition and equipment selection/maintenance.

On-snow training begins as soon as possible in early November and continues until late April.  Most training is held at Nakiska on weekends and school holidays throughout the regular season.  Weekday training is offered at Nakiska and in the evenings at COP on a variable schedule that is communicated in advance.  Other local resorts in Alberta and eastern B.C. will be utilized dependent upon athlete needs, snow conditions and terrain availability.

Several on-snow summer training camp options are offered in coordination with the K1 and FIS programs.

On-snow training runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm each day with a 45-minute lunch break.  Evening training at COP runs from 6:00pm to 8:30pm.
