Volunteering and Fundraising

The success of any non-profit organization depends on the contribution of its members. The member clubs of NASA keep program costs low and quality high through fundraising and volunteer involvement and tries to have fun while doing so.

Did you know that only 50% of our costs are recovered from registration fees? Another 25% comes from Casino funding while the remaining 25% comes from our annual Live & Silent Auction fundraiser and other smaller fundraising opportunities throughout the season - grocery cards, calendar sales etc.

Casinos

Support for a member club casino is simple: when a date is set by the Gaming Commission the club will send out a request for volunteers, and club members select their preferred shifts.  A few hours spent helping to staff the casino is all it takes.  The next member club casinos are scheduled in the following financial quarters - watch the calendars for dates as they are confirmed:

  • National Alpine Training Centre (FIS) Casino - Sept 14-15, 2011
  • Kananaskis Alpine Racing Club (K2) Casino - Feb 20-21, 2012

Black Diamond Bash Silent and Live Auction

Our Silent & Live Auction fundraiser, "The Black Diamond Bash" is a great social event held each season that brings in much necessary funding to the NASA organization.  The date for the 2011 gala is Friday, November 4th, 2011 at Heritage Park.  As part of joining a NASA club, each family is required to contribute to the Silent & Live Auction by purchasing tickets to attend the event and provide or solicit items for the auction.

  • Mini Meisters & NGI families are exempt from this obligation but we encourage you to contribute and attend the event!
  • The obligations for NGD, KD, K1, K2 and FIS atheltes vary per program and can be fulfilled through any combination of ticket sales and auction items to the minimum totals below:
    • NGD - $250 per athlete
    • KD - $350 per athlete
    • K1 - $500 per athlete
    • K2 - $650 per athlete
    • FIS - $850 per athlete
  • For families who register after the Silent & Live Auction, NGD, KD, K1, K2 and FIS program fees will be increased by the minimum commitment above in lieu of your participation in the event.

When you register in the NGD, KD, K1, K2 or FIS programs, a deposit in the amount above will be added to your registration, due April 15th, 2012.  This can be provided in the form of a post-dated cheque or credit card authorization (depending on your chosen form of payment).  As long as you meet your obligation, this deposit will not be processed.

Email updates will be sent out to all families in the weeks leading up to the Black Diamond Bash to inform everyone of the financial progress to date.  The more successful the silent auction, the fewer other fundraising projects will be required throughout the year to maintain and ultimately lower program costs in the future.

GMC/Alberta Alpine Raffle Tickets

Upon registration with NASA, each family purchases one book of 10 raffle tickets for a new GMC Terrain that is given away at the end of the season (only one book per family required, regardless of the number of athletes registered).  The raffle tickets will be distributed to each family in early November and are then yours to either keep or to sell to friends/family/co-workers/etc for $10 each (you keep the cash to recover your purchase of the tickets).

Raffle Ticket buyers are then required to register their tickets on the Alberta Alpine website to ensure they are entered into the draw.

Safeway and CO-OP Grocery Cards

NASA sells Safeway and CO-OP grocery cards to members at face value (i.e. a $100 grocery card costs you $100 and gets you $100 at the store - no extra fees or expense to you!).  Safeway and CO-OP give back to NASA a small percentage from each card sold.  As everyone needs to eat and purchase groceries - why not direct the money through NASA and help us continue to provide the best programs possible at the most competitive prices.  Watch your email and the Hot News Headlines for details on this year's Grocery Card Program.
